Years ago, it was difficult to find personal finance blogs that addressed the financial component of homeownership. Owning property was either an investment — and a mathematical decision — or a home, and this ignored the economic value of a principal residence. For a variety of reasons (including the disappearance of the defined pension plan, the emergence of the gig economy, and the drive to find hidden value in new asset classes), the Canadian home eventually took on a new and larger role in the household investment strategy. RKHomeowner began as a way to help navigate the budgeting, saving, investing, and financial aspects of homeownership (and building a life in Canada).
